At the very early age of 3, Edwards grandmother Elizabeth, was his main caregiver to help out both working parents. She lived in an old 4 story wooden hotel, built in the early 1800's, mostly grayed unpainted wood, top to bottom. It was a Lincoln overnight stop on his way from Kentucky to Springfield per local legend.

Elizabeth taught him harmonica, violin, and mandolin, and some scales and chords. Music was also encouraged by the parents, mostly in church settings, where with his young sisters, they began singing as a group together when he was six.

All through school, Edward played various instruments in school bands, concert, jazz, marching, community concert bands, and eventually early rock bands. He played trumpet, tuba/Souzaphone, frenchhorn, flute, also learned piano and guitar.
